Being a firefighter means adopting a whole new family, a brotherhood of co-workers, whom aren't related but live together in close quarters.  And while they snip at each other and nag about everything, each would lay down his or her own life to safe one another as well as someone we've never met.  We are the crazy folks running into the burning building people are running out of.  We are the insane ones waking up at all hours of the night rushing to the aid of the needy, the desperate, the lonely.  We respond blindly to the unknown.  Our spouses (significant others), our children, our loved ones wait at home patiently for our safe return at the end of our shift.  We are the real American heroes, founded in the United States of America by Benjamin Franklin, baptized by fire, and consummated to the creed, "Save lives, fight fire, & protect property!"  Joining our ranks entails rigorous training, some butt-whoopin' fires, sleep deprivation (snoring, & not by choice), merger pay, cooking, cleaning, and good times.  Your only rewards may be the heart-felt gratitude of those you've helped, seeing the smiling faces on the children, and waving back to them as you drive down the road in your big fire truck.  You may have to work just a little harder if it's not in your blood, or not in your heart.  Being a firefighter becomes not just a job, but a life style.  You'll hear a siren and not look to see if you were speeding...yet where is it going and can I help.

The decision to become a firefighter impacts those you love as well as yourself.  Discuss your desires with them before taking that next step.

We are aware that some people want to become firefighters (that's why we did!), and that there are folks interested in relocating out to sunny California!  However, there are a few things you're going to need to know if you are interested in a position amongst our ranks.  Before you apply:

  1. First and foremost, you must be under the age of 37 years old to apply.  It is a Public Law (we didn't make it up, we just remind folks about it).

  2. Secondly, you should have your Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification (National Registry, or CSFMO).  While it's not the most important thing to have to get hired, it sure will increase your chances!

  3. And, you may be required to obtain a CPAT certification card.  This is done at your own time & expense.  It was required at one time, but is currently waived for new applicants.  It could be required without notice.

Once hired, you will receive on the job training for Firefighter I & II, Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations, and Airport Firefighter; and become certified under the DoD certification system.  If you are laterally hired, you'll receive base area & airfield familiarization.

Visit http://www.usajobs.opm.gov  or https://chart.donhr.navy.mil (secure site) to search for firefighter positions.  You will need to create your profile and a resume online.

Your resume becomes your application within the system.  A personnel specialist only pulls resumes when the site manager (Base Fire Chief) requests a "cert list".  If you are found qualified, your resume will be included in the package for the site manager to review for selection.  The chief officers will look over the applicants and contact those they determine most qualified for more information or phone interviews.  Feel free to contact our Fire Chief's office {(559) 998-1704} to see if your name made the list.  Repeatedly calling the chief's office or our fire stations will not increase your chances of getting hired.  In fact, it could have more of a negative affect.

Pictures shown on our website are a compilation from various sources.  Most are provided my the membership using either their own camera or the Union Locals.  No one has been compensated for their pictures, nor has this organization monetarily benefited.
